Alur Tarkari :Kalo Jeere - peyaj diye (Nigella,Onion Based Potato Curry)

Whereas I have found the internet to be flooded with elaborate recipes all around, I have also discovered that the simpler pleasures in life to be missing. Some things as simple as a well cooked dal, Alu Dum(Potato cooked under a Steam), Poached Egg are some of the things which are rarely found when compared to something like a Biryani or Pulao. One recipe that is one of my favourites with Luchi is "Kalo Jeera - Onion" based Potato Curry.

Preparation Time: 5 mins
Cooking Time: 18-20 mins

Ingredients:

  • Potato - 3 medium sized.200 gms.Cut them into small pieces.
  • Onion - 1 medium sized.50 gms.Made into a fine paste.
  • Turmeric Powder - 1.5 tsp
  • Kalo Jeera - 1/2 tsp.
  • Sugar - 1/2 tsp.
  • Salt - To taste
  • Vegetable Oil - 3 tb sp.

Procedure:
  • Heat the oil in a pan and wait for it to get hot.Turn the heat to low once the oil gets hot.
  • Add the Kalo Jeera(Nigella Seeds).Wait for the nigella seeds to sputter, at the end of which add the onion paste.
  • The onion paste will add some amount of moisture causing some more sputtering.
  • Add the sugar to the onion slices.
  • Stir for 6-8 mins till the onion paste turns dark brown.
  • Then add the potato slices.Sprinkle turmeric powder and salt over the potato.
  • Continue to stir for another 5 mins.
  • Then add 70-80 ml of warm water and put a lid on the pan.
  • Let it cook for 5 mins at the end of which the water will dry up and the potato should be done.
